Noise at Work
This training exists because your workplace was measured at or above the 85 dBA action level. With that come four rights workers learn here: free hearing tests, free hearing protection, training every year, and confidential access to your own records.
How Noise Damages Hearing
Loud noise kills the hair cells in your inner ear. They don't grow back, so the loss is permanent. The damage is silent and gradual, and under OSHA's dose rules every 5 dB louder doubles your noise dose, cutting the allowed exposure time in half.
Watching for Damage
Noise damage shows up first as a dip around 3,000–4,000 Hz: the noise notch. When your hearing shifts an average of 10 dB or more across 2,000–4,000 Hz from baseline (a Standard Threshold Shift), that’s an early warning, not a diagnosis. The annual test protects you, and the results are yours to review.

Fitting Your HPD
A half-inserted earplug protects almost nothing. Most hearing loss from earplugs comes from poor insertion, not poor product. Roll, pull, push, hold, check: the technique that turns the rating on the box into protection on the floor.

Protection only counts while it's on and intact. When to wear it, how to clean each type, and when a flattened foam plug or cracked earmuff cushion needs replacing, at no cost to you.

- dBA
- A-weighted decibels: loudness measured the way human hearing responds. The scale is logarithmic. Under OSHA’s exchange rate, every 5 dB louder doubles the noise dose.
- Action level
- An 8-hour average exposure of 85 dBA. At or above it, your employer must run a hearing conservation program: testing, protection, and this training.
- NRR
- Noise Reduction Rating: the lab-tested attenuation printed on a hearing protector. Real-world protection is lower once it is derated.
- HPD
- Hearing protection device: foam or pre-molded earplugs, or earmuffs.
- Audiogram
- A graph of your hearing at each frequency, per ear. Annual audiograms are compared to your baseline to catch change early.
- Standard Threshold Shift
- An average drop of 10 dB or more at 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 Hz from your baseline: an early warning that your hearing is changing.
